- Benjamin Franklin was a brilliant writer, scientist, inventor and one of America's founding fathers. Born in Boston, Ben moved to Philadelphia where he became a wealthy printer. Ben helped to create America's first lending library, volunteer fire department and postal service. He invented many important things including bifocal glasses and the lightning rod. Ben's most famous discovery was in 1752 when, in a dangerous experiment, he discovered that lightening is really electricity. He flew a kite in a thunderstorm and a spark from a cloud zoomed down the kite into a key tied to the end. In 1776, Ben helped write the Declaration of Independence and voted to form the U.S.A. Ben was 81 years old when he signed the U.S. Constitution.
